an artist and his copyright story

Gary Lee Price has been sculpting for 24 years professionally. His works are included in public and private collections through out the world including the L.D.S. Museum of Church History and Art, the Springville Museum of Art, the Salt Lake County permanent arts collection, Culver Military Academy, Culver Indiana, American Schools-Surry England, Westside Preparatory School, Chicago, Rich De Voss Women's and Children's Hospital, Grand Rapids Michigan, Dallas Arboretum, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Scottish Rite Children's Hospital, Dallas, The Gladny Center, Ft. Worth, Galleria Paseo Mall, Puerto Rico, Bluegrass Airport-Lexington, Kentucky, Michael Jackson Entertainer, Neverland Ranch, California, Nu-Skin International-Provo, Utah, Franklin Covey-Provo, Utah, many cities, libraries and other public facilities and hundreds of others.

Because of the increasing popularity of Gary's work over the years; art companies, dealers, foundry's and others, who do not have permission to do so, have copied and imitated many of Gary's sculptures and sold them illegally.

It became apparent that Gary's work was being copied several years ago as other artists familiar with Gary's sculpture would alert him to various ads, websites, mailers, catalogs, etc. offering for sale poorly crafted look-alikes. Knock offs include, the Bookworm, Puffed Up Prince, Wings, Circle of Peace, Kite Boy, the Natural, Pin High, Fine Feathered Friends, Etch a Sketch, Journey, Journey II and others. Since then hundreds of imitated sculptures have been sold and are continually being reproduced overseas in foundry's that cast them for pennies on the dollar. These pieces are then advertised through companies here in the U.S. and Europe, and then sold at a fraction of the cost.

Not only has this been damaging to Gary's business and caused sales to decline the past five years for his company, but the quality of these sculptures are so badly reproduced that it also injures the brand name and image that Gary and his employees have worked so hard to build over the last 20 + years.

Gary and other artists are now fighting back; we are currently involved in litigation with a New York company and have received a preliminary injunction, forcing the company to cease and desist the selling of these copied versions of Gary's sculptures. It has been a very frustrating process, but we are moving forward. With the continued support of others and by spreading the word, we know that we will eventually be able to shut down these illegal operations and restore the dignity and respect to the original creator of these beautiful and popular images.
